Group "AA" High School State Championships

Wrestlers from the 4 regions of the Virginia High School League, Group "AA" division converged on the Salem Civic Center for the 20th Annual State Wrestling Tournament.

Logan Turner (Soph) Cave Spring H.S., entered the tournament as Region IV, AA, HWT Champion with a 39-8 record and proceeded to work the field match ups against:

1st Round:  

Ronald Cruz (Jr) 30-4 from Park View-Sterling HS, Logan came away with a Fall: 3:23

2nd Round:

Stephen Nicosia (Jr) 20-12 from Rustburg HS, Logan prevailed with a Fall: 3:57

Round 3 (Semi Final)

Evan Oddenino, (Sr) 27-4 from Fauquier HS, Logan fell short with a Decision 3-1, in favor of Oddenino. This placed Logan into the bracket to wrestle for 3rd place.

Round 4:

Jacob Rose (Jr) 23-9 from Tabb HS, Logan came away with a win by Fall:  2:50

Round 5:

Allen Chappell (Sr) 40-6 from Rockbridge Co. HS, Logan won by decision: 4-1. This win secured a finish of 3rd Place in the AA Heavyeweight 285 bracket.

DIVISION "AA" - REGION IV

CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

Magna Vista H.S. Ridgeway,VA  - February 10-11.2012

13 teams from Virginia High School League competed in the 2012 Division AA, Region IV wrestling tournament this past weekend.  Cave Spring H.S. as a team finished in 3rd place, despite leaving 6 wieght classes on the table and having to forfiet in those weight categories.

However, Cave Spring did produce two Region IV Champions 

• Coty Love (145 lb) 
• Logan Turner (285 lb) wieght classes. 285 FINALS BRACKET 
• 
  Five other Cave Spring wrestlers qualified for next week's State Tournament -

Chase McDaniel, Travis Hodges and Zach Hodges made it to the region finals.
Austin Mobley and Austin Amos placed in the top 4.

Turner,a Sophomore ranked #2 in State AA, received a Bye in the first round proceeded to work through the field with wins over:

• Alan Jones (Magna Vista) by Pin 0.53 ;
• Matt Nash (#7) (Abingdon) by Decision 8-3,
• Adam Thurman (#8) (Martinsville) by Decision 2-1 in the Championship Round.

Next it is on to the State AA Championships, next week (Feb. 16-17) at the Salem Civic Center.

2012 Group AA, Region IV,

River Ridge District Champion

Pulaski County High School was the venue for the 2012 River Ridge District wrestling tournament. As a team, Cave Spring High School, placed 2nd in the District and produced 2 District Champions in the 145 (Coty Love) and 285 Weight classes.

Heavyweight 285 Champion, sophomore LOGAN TURNER , increased his season record to 36-8 by defeating 

• Trevor Holdren (Hidden Valley HS) PIN: 36 sec.
• Rodney Hearse (Salem HS) PIN: 1:25

The District Title qualifies Turner, for next week's Group AA, Div. IV Regional Tournament, (February 10-11, 2012) to be held @ Magna Vista H.S. in Ridgeway, VA.
