Group "AA" High School State Championships
Wrestlers from the 4 regions of the Virginia High School League, Group "AA" division converged on the Salem Civic Center for the 20th Annual State Wrestling Tournament.
Logan Turner (Soph) Cave Spring H.S., entered the tournament as Region IV, AA, HWT Champion with a 39-8 record and proceeded to work the field match ups against:
1st Round:
Ronald Cruz (Jr) 30-4 from Park View-Sterling HS, Logan came away with a Fall: 3:23
2nd Round:
Stephen Nicosia (Jr) 20-12 from Rustburg HS, Logan prevailed with a Fall: 3:57
Round 3 (Semi Final)
Evan Oddenino, (Sr) 27-4 from Fauquier HS, Logan fell short with a Decision 3-1, in favor of Oddenino. This placed Logan into the bracket to wrestle for 3rd place.
Round 4:
Jacob Rose (Jr) 23-9 from Tabb HS, Logan came away with a win by Fall: 2:50
Round 5:
Allen Chappell (Sr) 40-6 from Rockbridge Co. HS, Logan won by decision: 4-1. This win secured a finish of 3rd Place in the AA Heavyeweight 285 bracket.
Logan finishes his Sophomore year with a regular season record of 43-9; (32 pins)

DIVISION "AA" - REGION IV
CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

13 teams from Virginia High School League competed in the 2012 Division AA, Region IV wrestling tournament this past weekend. Cave Spring H.S. as a team finished in 3rd place, despite leaving 6 wieght classes on the table and having to forfiet in those weight categories.
However, Cave Spring did produce two Region IV Champions
- Coty Love (145 lb)
- Logan Turner (285 lb) wieght classes. 285 FINALS BRACKET
Five other Cave Spring wrestlers qualified for next week's State Tournament -
Austin Mobley and Austin Amos placed in the top 4.
Turner,a Sophomore ranked #2 in State AA, received a Bye in the first round proceeded to work through the field with wins over:
- Alan Jones (Magna Vista) by Pin 0.53 ;
- Matt Nash (#7) (Abingdon) by Decision 8-3,
- Adam Thurman (#8) (Martinsville) by Decision 2-1 in the Championship Round.

River Ridge District Champion
Pulaski County High School was the venue for the 2012 River Ridge District wrestling tournament. As a team, Cave Spring High School, placed 2nd in the District and produced 2 District Champions in the 145 (Coty Love) and 285 Weight classes.Heavyweight 285 Champion, sophomore LOGAN TURNER , increased his season record to 36-8 by defeating

LOGAN TURNER, Places 2nd in HWT Finals at the 36th Annual "BIG ORANGE" Classic Wrestling Tournament
held @ William Byrd H.S., Vinton, Va. -This 2 day event was held, January 27-28, 2012 and featured 18 teams from around Virginia.
Though tournament officials did not publish the tournament seeds, Turner, a Sophomore @ Cave Spring H.S. entered the "Big Orange" for his first time, ranked # 3 in VAWA "AA" Division, (Region IV-River Ridge District), behind Mike Jones (Sr. @ Botetourt H.S.) ranked #1 in VAWA "AA" (Region III, Blue Ridge District) The only other VAWA ranked contender in the HWT divison, was Allen Chappell (Sr. Rockbridge Co. H.S.) #4 in VAWA "AA" Division-(Region III, Blue Ridge District).
After a 1st round bye, Turner went on to defeat Cody Morgan (Jr. Radford H.S.) in a 7-3 decision, that placed him into the Semi-final round against Allen Chappell - a repeat match from the Big Blue tournament semi final. Turner went on to defeat Chappell, by Fall in 2:50 .
The Finals round, also turned out to be a repeat of the previous week's Big Blue tournament, where Turner was pitted against Mike Jones of Botetourt again. The more experienced Jones went on to defeat Turner in a hard fought match by a 1-0 decision. This tournament marks the 3rd time that Jones and Turner have met in tournament finals this season, and they will most likely meet again at the State AA Tournament.
After this tournament, Turner has a 34-8 record in his sophomore season. Next on his schedule is the River Ridge District tournament @ Pulaski Co. H.S. (Feb.4, 2012) and Region IV - AA regional tournament @ Magna Vista H.S. (Feb. 10-11, 2012)
Logan's commitment to perfecting his skills are his main focus and his goal for this season is in pursuing nothing short of a State Title.

Logan Turner, Sophomore, from Cave Spring H.S. Roanoke,Va. was seeded 3rd in tournament, behind #1 ranked Mike Jones (Sr.) of Botetourt H.S. & # 2 seed Allen Chappell (Sr.) of Rockbridge Co. H.S.
Turner entered the tournament with a 2011-2012 H.S. regular season record of 29 wins-6 losses and all indications were that he would finish, as seeded.
Having a bye in the 1st round, Turner, went on to tally 2 wins, by pin over Rodney Hearse (Soph) from Salem H.S. (Pin: 1:25) & Corey Pollard (Sr.) Eastern View H.S. (Pin: 2:52) to enter into the Semi Final round as underdog to Chappell of Rockbridge Co. H.S.
Early in the Semi Final round, Turner suffered a near knock out blow, having been slammed, face first into the mat, by Chappell, but Turner quickly recovered to make a spectacular come back to finalize the upset victory over Chappell with a 3rd period PIN (5:52) over the #3 ranked, State "AA" HWT from Rockbridge H.S.
On to the " BIG ORANGE" tournament at William Byrd H.S., next weekend, January 27 & 28, 2012

Logan competed in this National pre-season tournament in the HWT 285 division consisting of 29 HWTs from around the country this past weekend in Greensboro NC.
This proved to be an exciting display of some awesome High School HWT talent.
Logan was one of 5 sophomores competing in the field of more experienced upper classmen, but managed to hold his own and made it to the 3rd round to compete in the
FINAL 16 pairings on Sunday, only to sustain a disappointing 3rd round loss by a 1-0 decision to Sam Rodgers of Wellington H.S. in Ohio.
Invaluable experience was gained and new friends made in this championship tournament, and made us all proud with his Intense Competitive and Sprited performances in all 3 of his matches...below are videos from his first two matches. (unable to video his 3rd match)
Experience gained he is looking forward to returning for his Junior and Senior years !

In another Pre-Season Wrestling tournament, Logan Turner HWT 285 (Cave Spring High School) participated in the HALLOWEEN HAVOC tournament at Davie County High School - Mocksville, NC.
In addition to Logan the field included heavyweights from North Carolina:
- Joe Vega - HWT Southside H.S.
- Brandon Lawson - HWT Tomahawk Wrestling
- Archer Lee - HWT Powerhouse Wrestling
In the Round Robin format, Logan prevailed and won all three of his matches by PIN and in doing so Won the HWT 285 Championship Title... below are the videos of each of those rounds.

August 2-a-day practices are in full swing and the 96 degree heat is a major factor (Channel 10 Cave Spring Video). Practice continues this week and we will have our first scrimmage with Floyd County HS on Friday August 5th @ Bogle Field, 6:00 pm. and next week we will have a scrimmage with Brookville HS in Lynchburg. Logan Ranks #13 Nationally, In Wrestling USA Magazine
Wrestling USA Magazine, March 15, 2011 issue, Ranks Logan #13 Nationally among the
30 -Nations Best Sophmores & Freshman High School Wrestlers and is the #3 Ranked Freshman of the 8 Freshman who made the list and is the only one from Virginia (in 285 weight class) that made the rankings. The magazine updated it's previous rankings in the November 15, 2010 issue, where Logan ranked 14th in that issue.
The six factors that are considered in determining the rankings are:
30 -Nations Best Sophmores & Freshman High School Wrestlers and is the #3 Ranked Freshman of the 8 Freshman who made the list and is the only one from Virginia (in 285 weight class) that made the rankings. Finishing out the 2011 Wrestling "Regular Season"
Logan has finished out the Regular & Post Season competition at the Region IV "AA" tournament in Grundy, Va. Placing 5th in the Region, just missing his qualifying, as a freshman, for the State Tournament in Salem, the states taking the 1-4 finishers in their respective weight class.
But nonetheless a very successful Freshman year and finishes the 2010-2011 regular season with an outstanding 22-8 record, earning the... Piedmont District HWT 285 Championship
and the 2011 Border Clash Tournament Championship - 285 HWT this season.
Moving on with the Post Season, Logan will be competing in the Nationals in VA Beach, March 29-April 1 and possibly the Ohio Tournament of Champions on April 16th in Columbus, Ohio.
He also is registered to attend the UVA wrestling camp in June as well as the VA TECH camp in July. Not one to rest on his laurels he plans to work on his skills throughout the summer in preparation for his Sophmore year.
But nonetheless a very successful Freshman year and finishes the 2010-2011 regular season with an outstanding 22-8 record, earning the... Piedmont District HWT 285 Championship

2011 PIEDMONT DISTRICT CHAMPION - REGION IV "AA" Hwt 285
The Piedmont District Championship match was held Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Martinsville M.S. Logan, a Freshman, entered the tournament seeded 2nd behind #1 seed & rival Zack Jennings (Sr) of Martinsville H.S.
After receiving a 1st round bye, Logan took on Jordan Blankenship (Sr) of Patrick County H.S. and pinned his rival in the First Round.
The Championship Match, against #1 seed Jennings, went the full 6 minutes, and resulted in a 9-1 decision in favor of Logan, resulting in the Heavyweight Championship title. A feat that has not been accomplished before by a Freshman wrestler in the Piedmont District.
Logan takes his Freshman year record of 18-6 into the Group "AA" Region IV Tournament this weekend, Feb. 11th & 12th, hosted by Grundy H.S. against some tough competion, all of which in his weight class are upper classmen. If Logan can finish in the Top 4, in the regionals, he will qualify for the State "AA" Tournament in Salem, Va. February 18th & 19th.
His confidence has not waned, as he certainly plans on competing in the State Finals, this year.
